INAPRUBAHAN ng Kamara de Representantes ang panukalang batas na magtatatag ng virology research institute sa bansa upang mas maging mabilis at epektibo ang pagtugon ng bansa laban sa pandemya katulad ng coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19).

Sinabi ni Quezon Rep. Angelina “Helen” Tan, pangunahing sponsor at awtor ng panukala, na itatayo nito ang Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines o VIP upang tutukan ang paglinang ng aplikasyon ng virology science and technology sa mga tanim, hayop at tao.

Iginiit ni Tan, isang doktor at chairperson ng House committee on health, na malaki ang maitutulong ng panukala para paghandaan ng bansa ang anomang pandemya o public health emergencies.

Sa kanyang sponsorship speech, sinabi ni Tan na magsisilbi ang VIP na pangunahing research and development institute at magtatatag ng estratehikong alyansa sa mga nangungunang siyentista sa buong mundo, virology centers, mga katulad na institusyon, at magsagawa ng malikhaing pananaliksik sa paglinang ng virology science sa bansa.

“The VIP shall implement policies, plans, programs, and projects for the development of virology science and technology in the country and the promotion of scientific and technological activities for both the public and private sectors. It shall ensure that the results of these activities are properly applied towards self-reliance and utilized to accelerate economic and social development towards the protection of the citizens and its resources,” ani Tan.

Bilang isa sa pangunahing prayoridad ng Department of Science and Technology (DoST), nakapaloob ang P283 milyong pondo sa pagtatatag ng VIP sa ilalim ng 2021 National Expenditure Program (NEP).
