Eddie Garcia’s family thanks PBBM for signing Eddie Garcia Law
THE family of the late popular actor Eddie Garcia, through his stepson 1-Pacman Rep. Mikee Romero, today thanked President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for signing the Eddie Garcia Bill into law.
“We would like to express our deep gratitude to the President for honoring the life of Manong Eddie, Manoy to family and friends, and his contributions to the entertainment industry,” Romero said.
Garcia’s congressman-stepson is principal author in the House of Representatives of the Eddie Garcia bill, which is now Republic Act No. 11996. The President signed it last Friday.
The late popular actor died in June 2019 after suffering an injury he sustained in an accident while filming a teleserye for television network GMA-7.
Romero said his stepfather, one of the country’s most awarded actors, “tripped on loose cables” on the filmset and “suffered cervical cracks and fractures” that led to his death.
He said the accident and Garcia’s death highlighted the need for a safe workplace for entertainment industry workers, many of whom are self-employed independent actors, actresses and performers.
He said the accident “served as a wake-up call for the industry and for us policymakers in Congress that led to the enactment of the law protecting the welfare of workers in the movie and television industry.”
“Manong Eddie’s untimely death was not in vain with the enactment of the law bearing his name,” he added.
The late Bicolano actor was the only FAMAS Hall of Fame awardee in three categories: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Fest Director.
He garnered at least 5 awards in each category, the most in FAMAS’ history.
