MANILA Mayor Isko Moreno announced the strengthening of the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) as a ‘’First Responder Unit (FRU)’ over and above its regular functions which is to enforce traffic regulations and maintain a smooth flow of traffic in the city.

Yesterday, Moreno, along with Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna and MTPB chief Dennis Viaje, personally received an ambulance donated by Barangay 699 chairman Edwin “Amo” Chan for the use of the city’s FRU.

Viaje said that on orders of Moreno, the MTPB again underwent a seminar recently to equip them with knowledge on how to handle accident victims and administer first-aid when needed.

It was learned that a unit of the MPTB personnel had been performing as FRU using their motorcycles while bringing their first-aid kits with them when accidents happen on the streets.

With the donated ambulance, Viaje said the FRU will be able to bring accident victims to the hospital swiftly, instead of waiting for the ambulance to arrive at the site.

“Gagamitin po natin ito upang makatulong sa mga naaaksidente sa lansangan, mabigyan agad ng first-aid ang mga nadidisgrasya sa kalsada at kung kinakailangan na dalhin sa ospital ay madala agad natin, kaya malaking bagay ‘yung ambulansya sa dinonate sa atin,” Viaje said.

The FRU was created last year on orders of Moreno, who also tasked Viaje to make sure the unit members undergo a regular seminar so they would know exactly what to do when responding to accidents.

Meanwhile, Moreno directed the department of public services headed by Kenneth Amurao to deliver 3,100 food boxes to families who used to be Manila residents but were relocated to Naic, Cavite and in Pandi and Norzagaray, both in Bulacan.

Amurao said the delivery of food boxes began Wednesday in Naic where they distributed food boxes to some 1,000 families.

On Friday, about 1,400 families were given the same food boxes in Pandi, Bulacan and on Sunday, Amurao said over 600 families received the same assistance in Norzagaray.

Amurao said the delivery was made in a very orderly fashion where the residents put chairs outside of their homes. The DPS put the food box on the chairs as they went house-to-house in the said areas.
