THE Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) unveiled the winners of its 18th annual National Art Competition on Friday at the GSIS gymnasium, cementing its status as one of the longest-running and most prestigious art contests in the country.

“This only shows how important and reputable the GSIS Art Competition has become within our local artistic community,” GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso said. “It remains one of the few open platforms where aspiring Filipino artists can exhibit their work, compete against their peers, and achieve national recognition.”

Out of 871 submissions, nine artists won in three categories: representational painting, abstract painting, and sculpture.

In the representational painting category, first place was awarded to Joseph O. Arao-arao for “Uno’s Gentle Warmth,” followed by Joie A. Pabilando’s “Tikatik Sa Mga Titik,” and Edu Perreras’ “Sa Hirap at Ginahawa.”

Rolando L. Yakit’s “Global Warming” took the top prize in abstract painting, trailed by Oliver C. Marquez’s “Tiangge Day” and Jovel M. Ruivivar’s “Lake of Fire.”

The sculpture category was dominated by Raymond M. Dong-e’s “Covid Variant Pandemic,” with Rodel G. Rillera’s “King of the Road” and Johnny T. Dulnuan’s “Ifugao Temporary Shelter (Allung)” clinching the second and third spots, respectively.

GSIS presented the top winners with Php300,000, while the runners-up received Php200,000 and Php100,000. The organization also honored five artists in each category with a Php25,000 honorable mention award.

The winning artworks are now part of the GSIS art collection and can be viewed at the GSIS Museo ng Sining in Pasay City until August 31, 2023. Non-winning entries may be retrieved from September 1 until December 16, 2023.
