Economic development

DESPITE the many wonders of modern technology, spreading the benefits of economic devlopment is better said than done in this impoverished Southeast Asian nation.

Admittedly, corruption in national and local government offices and agencies across the country is a major factor in our difficulty to disperse the benefits of growth.

But with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. in Malacanang, we now see a government committed to transform sleepy areas into flourishing communities.

In fact, the Filipino people, notably the unfortunate members of society, now expect the countryside, where majority of the poorest of the poor work and live, to bloom.

The public ought to rally behind the incoming Marcos government in pushing for the implementation of bold programs aimed at speeding up the tempo of rural development.

Let’s make the impoverished countryside, being abandoned by more and more rural dwellers due to the acute shortage of employment opportunities, productive anew.

“Mabuti naman at determinado si Pangulong Marcos na ibalik ang sigla sa kanayunan na kung saan nakatira ang ating mga kawawang magsasaka at mangingisda,” a rice farmer said.

Indeed, spreading the benefits of economic development right down far-flung communities not only in Luzon but also in the Visayas and Mindanao is a move in the right direction.

And concerned government offices and agencies should stop the rural dwellers’ exodus to the already congested Metropolitan Manila and other urban centers.

Let’s develop the rural areas by addressing the lack of industrial activities, increasing agricultural productivity and creating employment opportunities in the countryside.
