Borce, Canino shine in Batang Pinoy

VIGAN — John Cyrus Borce and Ruelle Canino shared the limelight by winning the bouys and girls standard category in the 2022 Philippine Sports Commission- Batang Pinoy chess tournamenrt at the Baluarte here.

Borce finished with a perfect score of five points to rule the boys 15-under standard category.

Borce finished half a point ahead of Mark Jovan Centayen and Michael Jan Stephen Inigo, who shared second to third places with 4.5 points.

Canino finushed in a two-way tie for first place with Maria Kristine Lavandero with five points, but clinched the gold medal with higher tiebreak score.

Jersey Marticio was third with four points.

Justine Sumer Oncita and Kaye Lalaine Regidor topped the boys and girls 13-under standard category, Mar Aviel Carredo and Zhaoyu Capilitan ruled the boys and girls 11-under standard and Caleb Royce Garcia and Mary Janelle Tan dominated the boys and girls 9-under standard.

Oncita finished with five points, half a point ahead of Hans Lee Villorente and a full point ahead of Keith Adriane Ilar, while Regidor edged Bonjoure Fille Suyamin in tiebreak after finishing wth identical 4.5 scores.

Carredo shared first place with Aaron Aton with five points, but took the title with higher tiebreak score, while Capilitan finished a full point ahead of Gllasea Ann Hilario and Kyle Jhazmin Clarito for the girls crown.

Garcia wound up with five points in the 9-under standard class, a full point ahead of Nathaniel Runez and Don Lester Abundo., while Tan finished with 4.5 points against four points of Mica Claire Clar and Adina Kwan.

Boys 11-under — 1. Mar Aviel Carredo; 2. Pat Ferdolf Macabulos’ 3. Aaron Aton.
Girls 11-under — 1. Nika Juris Nicolas; 2. Daniella Bianca Cruz; 3. Ashzley Aya Nicole Paquinol.

Chess is one of nine face-to-face sports held in Ilocos Sur.

The other sports were archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, table tennis, swimming, weightlifting, and obstacle course racing as demo sport.
