THE government is modernizing its detection system for any threat coming from the West Philippine Sea.

Everybody agrees that the country needs an effective air surveillance radar system in view of the evolving security landscape in the region.

That’s why we, like other well-meaning Filipinos, welcome the Philippine Air Force’s acquisition of a Japanese-built air surveillance radar system.

it is the first of four long-range surveillance radars ordered by the Department of National Defense in 2020 under a government-to-government deal.

The radar system has a range of up to 556 kilometers for air targets and more than 926 km for ballistic missiles, according to PAF authorities.

PAF chief Lt. Gen. Stephen Parreno said the system “enables us to detect potential threats from greater distances with increased precision.”

This, of course, gives concerned Philippine authorities “quicker response times to intercept,” according to the air force general.

Installed at the Wallace Air Station in San Fernando City, La Union. the J/FPS -3ME radar system replaced PAF’s US-made air surveillance radars.

The radar system at the former United States (US) air base in Northern Luzon will operate as part of the country’s integrated air defense system.

The government, with the help of friends and allies in the international community, ought to speed up the modernization of its military.

And we are all for this.
