ADMITTEDLY, more and more Filipinos, from the few rich and powerful to the many poor and lowly throughout the country, now use the internet and social media.

It is, without doubt, a welcome development in natural resources-rich Philippines, where the journey towards a digital future is already in full swing .

In fact, of the more than 110 million Filipinos, 85.16 million are internet users, a high internet penetration rate of 73.1 percent of the country’s total population.

No less than President Marcos admitted in a recent speech that e-commerce has become one of the fastest growing trends in this Southeast Asian country.

In a keynote speech delivered at the 10th Asia Summit in Singapore, Marcos said that advancements in e-commerce flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the two-year COVID-19 pandemic, which ravaged the domestic economy, people were forced to stay home because of so many government restrictions.

“Kaya nga nauso ang online marketing sa bansa. Ang mga tao ay ayaw lumabas ng bahay dahil sa takot sa nakamamatay na sakit,” an online businesswoman said.

In his speech in Singapore, the Filipino Chief Executive said the growth of the country’s digital economy bodes well for international companies that wish to take advantage of it.

And we agree with President Marcos when he said that the highly- educated and English-speaking Filipino workforce has propelled the country onto the global stage.

Hindi lang tayo English-speaking, masipag at highly-trained na mga manggagawa, tayo ay computer-literate pa.
