UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Los Baños has launched a modern eco-friendly electric jeepneys that will ply between the campus and the town proper.

The launching was in partnership with the municipal government and the Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Drivers at Operators ng Los Baños (SNODLOB) Transport Service and Multi-purpose Cooperative.

UPLB chancellor Jose Camacho Jr. underscored the significance of the e-jeepneys in the campus.

Danilo Lescano, president of the SNODLOB, said their transport cooperative acquired the first batch of the e-jeepney units for the government’s public utility vehicle modernization program, in response to UPLB’s green mobility inside the campus.

An e-jeepney has 87% lower greenhouse gas, does not produce smog, reduces air pollution and its associated health effects, and environment-friendly.

The franchise for the e-jeepneys was granted by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. It will also provide for future deployment of modern jeepneys between Calamba City and UPLB.

Los Baños Mayor Antonio Kalaw thanked the UPLB for supporting the various projects of Los Baños concerning livelihood, environmental protection, and public health, including its COVID-19 vaccination drive.

Kalaw reiterated the local government’s commitment and cooperation with the green mobility initiative for the advancement of public welfare.
