Torre, Young to hold chess simul at ERJHS
ALL chess roads lead to Quezon City as Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre holds simultaneous exhibition chess matches with select students and alumni of E. Rodriguez Jr. High School in Mayon Ave., Quezon City on May 22.
Torre will join ERJHS Alumni Sports Hall of Fame awardee IM Angelo Young in the special simultaneous exhibition matches organized by the ERJHS Alumni Sports Club in cooperation with the E. Rodriguez, Jr. High School and former ERJHS Alumni Association president Jess Asistin.
Dubbed “Isulong Mo with GM Eugene Torre and IM Angelo Young”, the unique chess activity will showcase outstanding student-players and alumni of the leading Quezon City high school.
This will be the second time that Torre will play simultaneous exhibition matches against select ERJHS students.
The 71-year-old Torre swept his 15-board simul also organized by the ASC and the Meralco Sports Foundation at the Barangay N.S. Amoranto in February, 2018.
Joining Torre is Young, who was honored as one of the outstanding alumni of the school during the first-ever Alumni Sports Hall of Fame and Scout Achievers Awards held last March, 2016.
Before the simul, IM Idel Datu will also conduct a chess lecture for ERJHS students.
“We’re excited. The students are eager to meet and even play GM Torre in simultaneous chess exhibition matches,” said ERJHS Principal Gina L. Obierna.
ERJHS Alumni Sports Club president Ed Andaya said a five-round Swiss system tournament will be held to determine the top students who will play exhibition matches against Torre and Young.
Select alumni will also be allowed to join the simul matches, which serve as part of the “ERJHS Alumni Sportsfest 2023.”
Supporting the event are ERJHS Alumni Sports Club vice presidents Imee Gines and Oliric Lacsamana and advisers Zeny Castor and Rene Baena.
Tournament director is Roy Madayag of Batch 91.
