THE Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) urged the Department of Education (DEPED) to clarify that the P5,000 cash allowance usually received by classroom teachers is not an additional monetary aid but a benefit given to them on school opening.

“This is to clarify that the Cash Allowance declared by the DEPED in a press conference yesterday is not an ayuda or a special aid to teachers for this school year, “ said TDC national chairperson Benjo Basas.

Basas stressed that it is actually part of the regular benefits assigned to teachers.

“This is the same fund that was being assigned to chalk allowance, a meager incentive which through the years, slowly reached P3,500 in 2020 ,where it was also called Cash Allowance .

“Since we were not using chalk at the time, but were purchasing teaching materials with it instead, “Basas explained.

He added that since last year, the allowance has also covered internet and communication expenses and even the supposedly free annual medical examination of teachers.

The DEPED earlier said it will disburse cash allowance of P5,000 to all teachers during the opening of classes on Monday.

“We would like to announce na sa pasukan sa August 22, we will be giving our teachers ‘yung tinatawag nating cash allowance na P5,000,” DEPED spokesperson Michael Poa said in a joint press conference last Friday.

He said it will augment and give the teachers assistance for their return to school.

“Everyone will receive it. It will be passed down to school divisions — I”ll confirm — but everyone will receive it by August 22,” Poa stressed.
