SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Thursday expressed appreciation to the executive departments for their rapid response to his call for enhanced benefits for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs), saying the implementation of the increased monthly discount to P500 signifies a notable advance in the government’s commitment to these sectors.

Speaker Romualdez commended the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Agriculture (DA), and Department of Energy (DOE) for their decisive actions following productive dialogues, particularly praising Secretary Alfredo Pascual, Undersecretary Carolina Sanchez and her team at the DTI for their role in facilitating this prompt response.

“The swift action taken by these departments to increase the discounts for our senior citizens and PWDs is not just a victory for these groups but a triumph for all ordinary Filipinos,” stated Speaker Romualdez.

He elaborated on the broader impact of this policy, emphasizing that the increase in discounts would provide more disposable income for families, thereby stimulating local economies and promoting a more inclusive economic growth.

Speaker Romualdez noted that this initiative is in line with the broader government agenda to enhance the quality of life for all Filipinos, especially the elderly and PWDs. It also complements the recent enactment of Republic Act (RA) 11982, the Expanded Centenarian Act, which provides additional support to senior citizens.

Speaker Romualdez underscored the benefits of this policy to the ordinary Filipino, noting that the increased discounts would lead to significant savings for families, thereby alleviating the financial burden on many households.

“By increasing the purchasing power of our senior citizens and PWDs, we are indirectly benefiting their families and the broader community. These savings can be redirected to other essential needs, contributing to the overall economic health of our nation,” he explained.

He also highlighted that this policy demonstrates the government’s dedication to building a more compassionate and equitable society, in line with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr.’s vision.

This, the Speaker pointed out, was made possible through the collaborative effort between the legislature and the executive in championing the welfare of senior citizens and PWDs which is a hallmark of good governance.

Speaker Romualdez vowed that the House of Representatives would continue its advocacy for policies that support and empower all Filipinos, particularly the most vulnerable sectors.

“Through these concerted efforts, we are making strides towards a more inclusive, caring, and prosperous Philippines where the benefits of development are felt by every Filipino,” he added.
