THE Supreme Court (SC) has declared its full support for the 2023 One Billion Rising Global Campaign: Rise for Freedom, aiming to end violence against women.

This, as the high court has expressed its commitment to inclusivity and equal justice in its Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027 (SPJI).

Associate Justice Jhosep Y. Lopez, chairperson of the SC Committee on Gender Responsiveness in the Judiciary (CGRJ), stated that violence against women remains a significant social issue in the country.

Lopez emphasizes that the judiciary should give this issue their full attention, especially since gender-based violence continues to rise.

Associate Justice Maria Filomena D. Singh, co-chairperson of the CGRJ, disclosed that violence against women remains the most widespread and persistent human rights violation in the world, with 105,837 cases reported from 2017-2021.

However, Singh believes that this number does not accurately represent the situation since most cases go unreported.

To kick-off the campaign, the SC has organized a series of activities, including seminars on intimate hygiene and health, a film showing on women survivors of violence, and a Filipino adaptation of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues.

The 2023 One Billion Rising Global Campaign: Rise for Freedom is a 10-year movement that aims to end violence against all women, regardless of gender identity. The SC is committed to ending gender-based violence and promoting equality in the judicial system.
