A 68-year-old retired overseas Filipino worker accused of beating a resident of Cainta, Rizal, shot dead three barangay security officers sent to accost him in his residence before he was gunned down by responding policemen on Saturday afternoon, Rizal Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, Colonel Rainierio M. De Chavez said yesterday.

James Jazmines, a resident of Greenland Subdivision located at the boundary of barangays Sta. Ana in Taytay and San Juan in Cainta, both in Rizal, refused to surrender peacefully to members of the Rizal PPO’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and the Cainta and Taytay Municipal Police Stations (MPS) who surrounded his residence and appealed to him to yield.

De Chavez said the suspect ignored the lawmen’s pleas and fired shots at them injuring Corporal Glen Isagon, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Other officers returned fire killing the suspect on the spot.

Prior to the shootout, the Rizal police director said that William Celestino, a resident of Sitio Victoria in Bgy. San Juan, went to the local barangay office to file a complaint against the accused.

The complaint for physical injuries was recorded in the barangay blotter before three members of the barangay peacekeeping force identified as Romeo Cortez, 55; Roberto Donor, 51; and Ronnie Gonzales, 58, accompanied the complainant and his son to the suspect’s residence around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

A subdivision security guard identified as Bernard Sales escorted the group to the residence of the suspect.

However, while trying to call the attention of the accused, the latter suddenly shot the victims with his caliber .30 Carbine rifle killing the three barangay tanod on the spot and injuring Sales.

De Chavez said that members of the Cainta MPS led by Major Jake Cariño immediately responded to the scene. The Cainta policemen were later reinforced by officers from the Rizal PPO’s SWAT team and the Taytay MPS.

The official said he was saddened by the senseless killing of the three barangay security officers and the wounding of one of his men who was only performing his duty.

He said that they are still checking the records of the rifle recovered from the possession of the slain suspect.
