Police athletes shine in int’l sporting event

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) Athletics Team shone the brightest in the recently-concluded “5 Throws for All 2023 Philippine Masters Athletics Championship” held at the Ultra track and field oval in Pasig City last week.

The PNP team, led by Colonel Marlou Roy V. Alzate and supervised by Lieutenant Col. Chona Panganiban, went home with 22 gold, 31 silver, and eight bronze medals at the end of the competition participated in by different athletes around the country as well as Japan.

The team is currently preparing for the July 28 to August 6, 2023 World Police and Fire Games that will be held in Winnipeg, Canada and the 22nd Asia Masters Athletics Championship to be held at the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac on November 8 to Nov. 12 this year.

The members of the PNP Athletics Team who emerged victorious in last week’s event earning congratulations from PNP Chief General Rodolfo S. Azurin Jr. were led by Police Senior Master Sergeant Maricris Gammag, who took the gold in the discus, shotput, hammer, and javelin events.

One of the winning athletes, Corporal Janzhel Udaundo bagged a bronze in the discus event; a silver in the shot put and hammer events; and a silver in the 4×100 meter relay while Police Senior Master Sgt. Aaron Jayxen Banatao got a gold in the 100-meter race and long jump event; a silver in the 200-meter and 4×100-meter relay and a bronze in the 400-meter race.

Corporal Jerson Galoso got the gold in the long jump; a silver in the 110 high hurdles; and a bronze in the 4×100 relay. Patrolman Dave Gumacal earned the silver in the 3-kilometer walk and a bronze in the 4×100 race.

Cpl. Ferlyn Dalida earned a gold in the long jump and a silver in the javelin throw while PEMS Juny Rex Carreon bagged a gold in the 4×400 meter race for 40-years old; and a silver in the long jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Police Master Sgt. Michael Pelaez also got a gold in the 100-meters, 200-meters, 400-meters, long jump, 4×400 mix and 4×400 men; and a silver medal in the 4×100 men.

PSMS Marissa Tumpalan got a gold in the 4×400 mix (40-years up) and a silver medal in the 100-meters, 200-meters, 4×100 female (30-years up) and the 4×100 mix. PEMS Virgilio Aguila also got a gold medal in the 4×100 meter race and a silver in the 100-meters, 200-meters; long jump, and 4×100 meter race and a bronze in the 400-meter race.

PSMS Victor Ayohan Jr. earned a gold in the 800-meter race and a silver in the 200-meter and 4×100 race; PMSgt. Bryan Urayenza got a gold in the 4×400 mixed race (40 years old up); while PMSgt. Eduard Antonio bagged a silver in the 4×100 mixed race and a bronze in the 4×100 race; PMSgt. Ronijen Sofla earned a gold in the 4×400 meter relay and a silver in the 800-meter and 4×100-meter relay.

Patrolman Robert Francisco got a gold in the high hurdles and a bronze in the 4×100 relay; PSMS Janicel Balares earned a silver in the 4×100 meter-relay and 4×100 relay; and Cpl. Norman Flores got a silver in the 4×100 meter relay and a bronze medal in the triple jump event.
