Need for unity

NOW divided by intense political rivalry, the people, particularly those in the countryside, need to set aside their many differences as the government battles COVID-19.

This after the nationwide fight against the dreaded virus, which has killed close to 49,000 Filipinos, suffered “another blow” with the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant.

While people support different candidates and political parties in next year’s national and local polls, we cannot overemphasize the importance of the people working in unison.

We must not completely turn a deaf ear to the calls of the poorest of the poor, who comprise the bulk of the Philippine population, not only in the metropolis but elsewhere.

Many of these unfortunate and needy Filipinos are unable to eat three times a day because of economic difficulties brought about by the adverse effects of the pandemic.

Of course, concerned government authorities are determined to intensify their efforts to monitor “Omicron,” the new variant which was first detected in South Africa.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that “blanket” travel bans may do more harm than good and ultimately dissuade countries from sharing data about “Omicron.”

The United Nations (UN) agency called for the global response to be “calm, coordinated and coherent.”

And for the benefit of the people, we urge the government to improve the vaccination process by doing away with the pre-registeration of those who want to be inoculated.

And as one Department of Health official said, vaccination centers should not close early, with no one among those in line should go home without getting inoculated.

Dapat lang!
