BEFORE the end of the year, the government hopes to register 70 million Filipinos for the Philippine Identification (PhilID) card as decreed by Republic Act (RA) No. 11055.

This after a total of 20,724,895 Fililipinos have already completed Step 2 of the registration process, where iris and fingerprint scans and front-facing photographs are recorded.

In designated registration centers across the country, the registrants’ biometric and demographic informations are taken and verified, respectively, the government said.

Given the pace of the registration, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is on track meeting the government’s target of registering 50 to 70 million Filipinos before the end of the year.

Based on the last survey, the Philippine population now totals more than 109 million.

It will be recalled that last August 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte signed RA No. 11055, which aims to establish a single national identification card for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

Called PhilID Card, it is a valid proof of identity and must be honored in all public and private transactions.

For government transactions, the PhilID Card can be used to apply for social and welfare benefits, such as those offered by the DSWD, GSIS, SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG Fund.

For private transactions, the government-issued national ID Card can be used for bank transactions, like opening of accounts.

The people’s eagerness to register for the PhilID Card is ample proof that Filipinos now want to simplify all public and private transactions.

At ayaw na ayaw nila ang red tape, lalong-lalo na sa mga pampublikong opisina.
