Mapua to defend PUBL crown

EVERYTHING is set for the staging of the Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL), which starts on January 19 at the Lam An Sports gym in Abad Santos Manila.

Defending champion Mapua Institute of Technology is back to defend its crown against seven other teams in the month-long tournament organized by Federation of School Sports Athletic

Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) in cooperation with Asia Pacific University Sports Union (APISU) and Basketball Assiciation of the Philippines (BAP).

This was announced by tournament head Melchor Posadas Divina during the meeting held at Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) in Paco, Manila.

The Cardinals, handled by coach Randy Alcantara, defeated Philippines Christian University, 92-64, last July for its second PUBL crown.

Now on the fourth season, PUBL attracted a total of eight teams divided in two groups. The top two teams in each group will play in semifinals match with the winner playing in a winner-take-all final match.

The champion will represent the country in the 21st ASEAN University men’s basketball 5×5 competitions while the runner-up will represent the country in 3×3 competitions to be held in Surabaya, Indonesia on June 25.

The Cardinals will joined in Group B by Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS), Bataan Peninsula State University from Region 3 and Dela Salle University – Dasmariñas from Region 4.

Group A will composed of NCR University of Perpetual Help System Dalta and New Era University, Tarlac State University from Region 3 and Batangas State University of Region 4.

The other two other teams are Philippine College of Criminology (PCCr) and First City Providential College (FCPC) from San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.

Tournament commissioner Antonio Quiza Sr., Romulo Raytos is the tournament director while Nestor Macatuno and Nanding Gayanilo head the technical committee. AA
