THE expansion of the Laguindingan Airport Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) is expected to bring socio-economic benefits in Northern Mindanao.

Last Sunday, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista broke ground for the airport’s PTB extension as part of the 125th anniversary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Secretary Bautista said the expansion is seen to improve travel experience and provide sustainable aviation operations in Misamis Oriental and neighboring provinces.

“The upcoming expansion project will not only provide better passenger experience but will also push further our goals towards sustainability,” said Bautista.

The transport chief said once completed, the expansion of the Laguindingan Airport will further increase its pre-departure terminal capacity to 860 passengers daily from its current 500 passengers.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the expanded PTB of the gateway will use an innovative modular construction system.

Such strategy combines sustainability and cost-effectiveness, providing flexibility in design, swift construction, cost efficiency, and environmentally conscious choices, CAAP added.

The PTB expansion is expected to serve additional passengers after several national and local officials clamored for the opening of international flights in Laguindingan Airport.

Laguindingan Airport is an airport in Northern Mindanao that caters to the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, and Marawi, as well as the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, and Bukidnon.

The gateway is the second busiest airport in Mindanao and the sixth busiest airport in the country, servicing an estimated two million passengers annually.

Meanwhile, local officials expressed gratitude to Bautista for launching vital transport projects in Northern Mindanao.
