LIKE in the past, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) holds job fairs in various parts of the country on Labor Day, May 1.

On this day, a regular holiday in the Philippines, overseas and local jobseekers troop to these job fairs manned by participating employers.

During the day-long job fairs, an estimated 155,000 job vacancies will be offered by the participating 1,901 employers.

To be hired on-the-spot are production workers, customer service representatives, cashiers, baggers, sales clerks, laborers, carpenters, and painters.

Also needed are microfinance officers, financial advisers, cooks, waiters, truck drivers, nurses, property consultants and service crew.

This year, DOLE, headed by Secretary Bienvenido “Benny” Laguesma, also plans to bring the “Kadiwa ng Pangulo” outlets to the Filipino workers.

Workers and consumers may access quality but affordable products from 1,015 enterprises and 2,414 sellers in 92 Kadiwa ng Pangulo outlets nationwide.

Like December 25, January 1 and Easter Sunday, Labor Day is a much-awaited celebration in impoverished Philippines.

During the incumbency of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, the government always granted new benefits to the working class on May 1.
