High alert

WITH just seven months and 11 days before the end of the six-year Duterte presidency, the government must remain on high alert against illegal drugs, corruption and criminality.

But the end does not in any way mean the incoming administration, whether opposition or pro-Duterte, should no longer pursue efforts to address the nation’s three major problems.

Likewise, the new government ought to look deeper into the other problems, like hunger, poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and high prices of goods and services.

As it is, it appears that there’s a need to elect candidates perceived to be pro-development to ensure the welfare of the people, who are mostly poor farmers and fishermen.

Under the Constitution, President Duterte, the first Chief Executive from impoverished but natural resources-rich Mindanao, is set to leave Malacanang on June 30, 2022.

The country’s more than 63 million registered voters go to the polls on May 9, 2022 to elect the successor of Duterte and thousands of other national and local government officials.

And those who really want to transform the Philippines into a flourishing country must be aware of the presence of politicians who just want to remain in their juicy positions.

This early, based on initial public opinion surveys conducted by different groups, there’s no runaway candidates.

What’s clear is that those running for public office, particularly national candidates, are engaged in heated verbal exchanges with their political rivals.

Pero sa huli ay mga botante pa rin ang hahatol sa kanila pagdating ng araw ng halalan.
