Gun accidentally fires; PNP instructor, trainee hurt

CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO, La Union – A PNP gun instructor and a police trainee were hit and injured when the gun they were using during demonstration went off Tuesday inside the Regional Training School in Aringay town.

Ilocos Region PNP Director, Gen. Emmanuel Peralta immediately ordered an investigation of the incident.

Wounded were Police Trainee John Conrad Villanueva, 23, single, resident of Binalonan Pangasinan and PCpl. Benny Duyapat, 32, married, RTC 1 Instructor and a resident of Panoktupan Lamot, Ifugao.

Investigation showed police trainees were having firearms demo exercises under assistant instructor PCpl Benny Duyapat when the incident occurred.

In the course of demonstration, however, the demo pistol accidentally fired and hit the palm of Duyapat and the right thigh of Villanueva.

The injured victims were brought to the CABA District Hospital for immediate medical treatment.

Peralta directed the Regional Special Training Unit chief to directly coordinate with the Philippine National Police Training Institute who is in charge of the conduct of the Basic Police Recruit Course to revisit their manual of instruction and conduct a training of trainors to avoid similar incidents in the future.
