Globe, ZSL, Iloilo fisherfolks sanib-puwersa para sa mangrove conservation project
NAKIPAGSANIB-PUWERSA ang Globe, kasama ang Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Philippines, sa isang local fisherfolk association sa Brgy. Pedada, Ajuy, Iloilo upang isulong ang science-based mangrove conservation efforts sa lugar.
May 40 volunteers mula sa Globe, ZSL Philippines, at Brgy. Pedada Fisherfolk Association (BPFA) ang tumulong kamakailan sa pagtatanim ng mahigit sa 800 seedlings ng Sonneratia alba (locally known as Pagatpat) at Avicennia marina (locally known as Bungalon, Apiapi, or Miapi) sa 3,000 sqm coastal area ng Brgy. Pedada. Ang mga seeds at seedlings na ito ay kinolekta mula sa kalapit na mother trees at pinalaganap sa nurseries ng local community.
“We want to share the value of doing a #GlobeOfGood through environmental stewardship. Globe believes that through nature-based solutions, technology and innovation, we can protect, sustainably manage, and help restore natural ecosystems to create a sustainable future for Filipinos,” wika ni Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.
Ang mangroves o bakawan ay intertidal forests na matatagpuan sa saline at brackish water na nagkaloob ng iba’t ibang produkto at serbisyo sa mga tao sa loob ng isang millenia.
Ayon nga kay Dr. Jurgenne Primavera, Chief Mangrove Scientific Advisor ng ZSL: “Especially in these times of global warming and sea level rise, mangroves are at the forefront of Climate Change adaptation (as coastal greenbelts that provide storm protection) and mitigation (as carbon sinks that capture carbon at 4 to 5 times the rate of other forests, including the tropical rainforest).”
Ang Globe at ZSL Philippines ay masusi ring nakikipag-ugnayan sa local barangay officials at fisherfolk organizations sa pagpapalawak ng pagtatanim sa mga katabing lugar sa Barangay Luca, Ajuy, na kalaunan ay aabot ang total area sa 2.7 hectares.
Gayundin ay nakikipag-ugnayan sila sa Iloilo City local government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, at sa United Architects of the Philippines – Bahandi sa posibleng pagtatanim ng beach forest species at pangangalaga sa mga umiiral na bakawan sa Molo Boulevard at Baluarte areas.
Binigyang-diin ni Louie Sebastian Miranda, Globe Regional Sales Head, na masigasig na ipinatutupad ng regional teams na nakasasakop sa Iloilo City at Panay ang programa.
“We will sufficiently allocate volunteers to plant and take care of these mangrove projects. The teams will ensure that efforts are continuous and Globe’s conservation program will be more sustainable in the long run,” aniya.
Maigting na sinusuportahan ng Globe ang United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, partikular ang UN SDG No. 13, na nagbibigay-diin sa kahalagahan ng kagyat na climate action upang mailigtas ang mga buhay at kabuhayan at matugunan ang climate emergencies, at ang UN SDG No. 15, na nagsusulong sa proteksiyon, restorasyon, at pangmatagalang paggamit ng terrestrial ecosystems.
