Girl,3, PWD killed in Manila, Makati fires

A THREE-YEAR-OLD girl and a person with disability were killed in fires that hit Manila and Makati yesterday morning and Monday evening, respectively.

The young girl died in a fire that hit a residential area in Tondo, Manila early yesterday morning. The victim was identified as Cia Sophia Quilit, 3, of Pilapil Street in Dagupan, Tondo. A report from the Manila Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said that the blaze began at 1:13 a.m. at the four-storey home of a certain Imelda Quilit located on 808 Pilapil St., Dagupan, Tondo, Manila.

The fire reached third alarm and was totally controlled at 3:58 a.m. Ten homes were razed by the fire which also displaced about 20 families in all.

Estimated damage to property is P300,000 and authorities are investigating to determine the cause of fire.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old person PWD died in fire that razed 12 houses and left 18 families homeless Monday evening in Makati city.

Makati Fire Marshal Supt. Ian Guerrero said Jeremiah Rizon, alias “Perdo” was trapped inside his room at the 2nd floor of their house in San Bernardino St. Brgy. Olympia when the fire broke out at around 7:14 p.m.

The victim’s father Bernardo Rizon, 70, sustained 3rd degree burns and was rushed to the hospital.

The victim’s relative told arson probers that Bernardo tried to rescue his son but was prevented by thick smoke coming from the burning room

Makati Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) raised the fire to 3rd alarm after it spread to adjacent houses mostly made up of light materials. The fire was finally put out at at around 8:15 p.m.

Guerrero said arson investigators are still determining the cause of the fire that destroyed P300,000 worth of properties. By ITCHIE G. CABAYAN & EDD REYES
