THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), through its Migrant Workers Offices (MWO) in Osaka and Tokyo, is reaching out to employers and companies in the Ehime and Kochi prefectures in Japan to ascertain the condition and safety of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

The move comes after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake rocked the two prefectures in western Japan around 11:14 p.m. on Wednesday.

MWO-Osaka issued Advisory No. 04-2024 today, reminding Supervising Organizations and Principals to monitor the condition of OFWs in their jurisdictions and report any incidents involving Filipino workers that the earthquake may have caused.

Initial assessments indicate no reports of injuries or deaths involving our OFWs. Nevertheless, MWOs Tokyo and Osaka will continue monitoring the situation and work closely with the Consulate General in Osaka and the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reports the quake’s epicenter at the Bungo Suido channel, south of Osaka. The earthquake did not cause a tsunami. Tremors of magnitude 1 to 4 were detected in the surrounding Shikoku, Kyushu, and Chugoku regions of southwest Honshu, Japan’s main island.

The DMW Head Office shall issue further updates as these develop.
