All set for GM Torre Cup chess tourney

THE best and the brightest in local chess 50 years old and above are expected to participate in the first GM Eugene Torre Cup seniors chess team championships on Sunday, March 26 at the Robinsons Townville in Buhay naTubig, Imus, Cavite.

Trophies and cash prizes are at stake in the prestigious one-day competition organized by the Inter-Agency Chess Group (IACG) in honor of Torre, who made history by becoming Asia’s first grandmaster in 1974.

IACG president Engr. Resito David said the champion in the rapid chess categry will bring home the lion’s share of P20,000 and the perpetual trophy.

The runner-up will receive P10, 000, the third placer P7,000, fourth placer P5,000 and fifth placer P3,000.

In case of ties in the major award prizes, this will be distributed according to fair prizes in each team.

The top individual performers on boards one to three will get P1,000 each.

In blitz, the champion will pocket P800, the runner-up P500, the third placer P400, the fourth placer P300 and the fifth placer P200.

The top senior 50 and above winner and the top senior 60 and above class will receive P300 and P200, respectively.

The event is open to all players 50 years old and above in good standing with the NCFP. Unrated will be given a provisional rating of 1800.

Based on tournamen tformat, each team is composed of three players with one player must be 60 above. Team can field one titled player either AFM, AIM, AGM, WNM, NM, WFM, FM, WIM, IM, WGM or GM.

Games will be played in six rounds Swiss System with allotted time of 15 minutes plus five seconds Increment. In blitz, it will five rounds Swiss system with allotted time of three minutes plus two seconds increment.

Registration fees are P1,500 for rapid team and P100 for blitz individual.
