THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Monday released a total of 416 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in an effort to ease “overcrowding” in prisons.

The culminating activity, witnessed by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and BuCor Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Gregorio Catapang Jr., was held at the BuCor headquarters in Muntinlupa City.

Of the 416, 205 were released from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), 76 from the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, and 42 from the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City.

Also, of those released, 78 were acquitted, nine were granted probation, and 81 were released on parole, while the remaining served their maximum sentence.

They came from across seven prison facilities all over the country, BuCor said.

As an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ), BuCor is administratively supervised by the DOJ, as stipulated by law.

The theme of the culminating activity was “Paglaya Para sa Bagong Umaga, Pag-ibig at Pag-asa’y Muling Matatamasa.”
