2 men dead in Malabon shootout

A jobless man and his nephew who sowed terror in their neighborhood by firing a gun indiscriminately were killed after they engaged responding lawmen in a shootout Thursday evening in Malabon City.

Malabon police chief P/Col. Joel Villanueva said Nolito Cimanes, 53, and his nephew Manuel Cimanes, 34, both of 444 Gulayan St. Bgy. Catmon succumbed to gunshot wounds in their bodies while being rushed to Ospital ng Malabon.

Homicide investigators P/SSgt. Julius Mabasa and P/SSgt. Ernie Baroy said elements of Station Intelligence Unit (SIU), led by P/Lt. Joseph Alcazar responded to the call of concerned citizen regarding the indiscriminate firing of gun by the elder Cimanes along Gulayan St. at around 10:45 p.m.

However, when Nolito noticed the presence of policemen, he fired his gun towards the direction of approaching lawmen, while his nephew pulled out a grenade, prompting P/SSgt. Jonathan Custodio and P/Cpl. Christian Benedict Casas to fire their service firearm, hitting the duo in their bodies.

Elements of the scene of the crime operatives led by P/Maj. Sonny Boy Tepace recovered from the suspects an M26 fragmentation grenade, .38 caliber revolver with four live bullets and two empty shells in its chamber, and a sling bag containing three heat-sealed plastic sachets containing undetermined quantity of shabu.
