THE 24-member Senate would do well now to hasten the approval of bills aimed at raising the economic and social status of barangay officials and employees across the country.

Note that the House of Representatives approved last December 2022 a proposed piece of legislation granting barangay health workers a monthly honoraria of P3,000 each.

Of course, this is in addition to hazard allowance of not less than P1,000 a month, P1,000 transportation allowance plus a monthly subsistence and food allowances.

Uplifting the living conditions of village officials and workers is a priority of President Marcos and his administration, knowing fully well the importance of these public servants.

“Karamihan ng mga programa ng gobyerno ay nagsisimula at nagtatapos sa mga barangay sa buong bansa,” according to a three-term barangay councilman.

Last Tuesday, the Senate committee on local government, chaired by Sen. J.V Ejercito, discussed said these various bills, which are all designed to give due recognition to village workers.

The bills include the proposed Magna Carta for Barangays of Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri and Magna Carta for Barangay Officials, Personnel and Volunteer Workers of Sens. Raffy Tulfo and Bong Go.

“We will consider these bills in order to come up with the best version that would greatly benefit our barangay officials, workers and volunteers in their respective communities,” said Ejercito.

Senator Go, on the other hand, underscored the need to provide every barangay basic facilities “for decent, healthy and comfortable living” of the Filipino people.

Speeding up the approval of these proposed pieces of legislation is a must if we are to ensure the welfare of the country’s millions of barangay officials, employees and their dependents.
