Vavavoom rules PSA Cup
VAVAVOOM displayed her class and zoomed to an easy win in the rain-hit Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Cup Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Metro Turf in Malvar, Batangas.
Thanks to the guidance of jockey Andrew “Dodong” Villegas, Vavaboom’s magnificence was in full display, leaving her rivals eating her dust in the 1.4-kilometer race.
The 4-year-old bay filly by Zap out of Comitatus exploded out of the gates and sustained a torrid pace en route to posting an impressive time of :1:25.4 (14-22’-22’26’).
That also led her to a massive five-length win over closest rival. She is owned and bred by Sandy Javier.
The Dan Camanero-saddled Lucky Lea, CP Henson-ridden Biglang Buhos and JA Guce-mounted Denueis Son settled second to fourth places, respectively.
Vavavoom’s victory did not surprise veteran trainer Ruben Tupas.
“Hindi na ako masyado na-surprise kasi lahat ng prestigious races naipanalo ko,” said Tupas, a recipient of multiple trainer of the year awards.
The proceeds of the race will go to the charity programs of the PSA headed by Philippine Star sports editor Nelson Beltran.
“This annual benefit race is for the PSA and we’re here to partner with the sportswriting community and support their advocacies,” said Philippine Racing Commission (PHILRACOM) president Reli de Leon.
De Leon was accompanied in the awarding ceremony by his acting executive director Ronaldo Corpuz and MMCTI’s race manager Rondy Prado.
