STEPHEN Marasigan netted a brace as University of Santo Tomas earned its first full points following a 2-0 victory over Ateneo in the UAAP men’s football yesterday at the UP Football Field.

A product of Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, Marasigan headed the ball home in the 22nd minute and doubled the Growling Tigers lead six minutes later after he coolly finished a tap-in right at the face of goal.

“Marasigan started slow,” said UST coach Marjo Allado. “Nung nakuka na niya yung momentum kanina nung naka-score siya, he gained his confidence. Ang ganda nung goals niya especially yung first goal niya.”

Later, Far Eastern University turned back La Salle, 2-1, to seize the solo lead in the table with seven points.

Marasigan could have had a hat-trick in the second half for the Growling Tigers but his attempt was parried away to safety by Blue Eagles keeper Artuz Cezar.

“It’s a very important game against UP,” said Allado, regarding the Thursday night match. “After this Ateneo game, we have to prepare against UP. We know they are a strong team so we have to prepare the players talaga dito. Not only the fitness but also for the strategies against UP.”

The Blue Eagles remained at three points to level with the Growling Tigers and the Fighting Maroons.
