THE newcomers shone for reigning three-time Volleyball Nations League champions United States in a 25-12, 25-21, 25-16 conquest of Poland at the Smart Araneta Coliseum yesterday.

Outside hitter Ali Frantti, in her first match in the Quezon City leg, had three blocks to finish with 18 points to go with seven receptions and six digs, while opposite Nia Reed, making her VNL debut, had 12 points and 13 digs for the Americans, who rose to 5-1.

The top-ranked team in the world, United States will have a weekend set against Asian powerhouses China today and Thailand tomorrow.

The third-ranked Chinese later tied with the Americans at 5-1 following a 25-16, 18-25, 25-12, 25-18 victory over Canada.

Li Yingying had three service aces to finish with 20 points to go with eight receptions and five digs while Gong Xiangyu chipped in 15 points and 17 receptions for China.

A product of US NCAA Division I powerhouse Penn State, Frantti liked what she saw with the team, which has a mix of members of Tokyo Olympic gold medalists and VNL debutants.

“It has been unbelievable with this being in this group of girls. It has been an honor and privileged just to be with all of these amazing talents,” said Frantti, who plays in Italian club Chieri ’76.

“It was a group effort tonight. I’m very happy with it,” she added.

Madi Kingdon Rishel also scored 11 points while Olympian Chiaka Ogbogu had two blocks for a nine-point outing for the Americans.

The first experience of playing under legendary coach Karch Kiraly was wonderful for Reed.

“It’s actually my first game competing with USA Volleyball. It’s a blessing to be here right now,” said Reed, who like Frantti has played for the highly-successful Penn State program along with captain Micha Hancock and middle blocker Haleigh Washington, who were rested for this match.

Poland, which drew 12 points from outside spiker Martyna Czyrnianska, dropped to 4-3 slate but remained well within the top eight range.

The Canadians, with Kiera Van Ryk leading the charge with 14 points and six digs, remained at the bottom half of the field with their fourth loss in seven matches.

Along with hosts Turkey, the top seven teams after the 16-team, three-week long preliminary stage will advance to the Finals in Ankara on July 13-17.
