Sa panalo nito sa prestihiyosong int’l moot court competition

PINAGTIBAY ng Kamara de Representantes nitong Martes ang isang resolusyon na kumikilala at bumabati sa University of the Philippines College of Law sa kanilang panalo sa prestihiyosong 2024 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition na ginanap sa Washington D.C. sa Estados Unidos noong Abril 6.

Kabilang sa mga mambabatas na nagsulong ng House Resolution (HR) No. 1683 sina Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales, Jr., Deputy Speaker David “Jay-Jay” Suarez, Majority Leader Manuel Jose “Mannix” Dalipe, Minority Leader Marcelino C. Libanan at Senior Deputy Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander A. Marcos

“The UP College of Law, my alma mater, again brings honor to our country by bagging the much-coveted Jessup trophy. It is the oldest and largest world competition that tests the aptitude of students in their knowledge of international law. We are so proud of this achievement!” ani Speaker Romualdez, lider ng Kamara na mayroong mahigit 300 kinatawan.

Kasama rin sa mga may-akda ng resolusyon sina Reps. Yedda K. Romualdez, Jude A. Acidre, Juliet Marie de Leon Ferrer, Roman T. Romulo, Peter John D. Calderon, Eleandro Jesus F. Madrona, Rufus B. Rodriguez, Ron P. Salo, Anna Victoria Veloso-Tuazon, Ysabel Maria J. Zamora, Bernadette “BH” Herrera, at Margarita “Atty. Migs” B. Nograles.

Ayon sa resolusyon, ang Jessup moot court competition ay isang pagsasanay kung saan naglalaban ang mga law students sa oral at written pleadings para ipanalo ang kanilang panig mula sa isang gawa-gawang alitan sa pagitan ng mga bansa sa harap ng International Court of Justice, na isang judicial organ ng United Nations.

“After days of grueling rounds and eliminations, the UP Law Jessup Team emerged as the lone team from the Asia-Pacific Region in the prestigious stage, whose remarkable journey culminated in a showdown against Universidad Torcuato Di Tella of Argentina,” saad sa bahagi ng resolusyon.

“During the gold medal round, this year’s problem, ‘The Case Concerning the Sterren Forty’ simulated a fictional dispute between nations, and tackled pressing issues of political expression, statelessness, nationality rights, and the authority of the United Nations Security Council in dispute resolution,” dagdag pa nito.

Tinalo ng UP Law ang Universidad Torcuato Di Tella of Argentina sa huling yugto ng laban at nasungkit ang Jessup Cup. Ang team ay binubuo nina Mary Regine Dadole, Pauline De Leon, Pauline Samantha Sagayo, Chinzen Viernes at Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal, kasama ang coach na si Professor Marianne Vitug at faculty advisor Professor Rommel Casis.

Nakuha naman ni Villareal ang Schwebel Award for Best Oralist sa championship round.

“UP Law made history in 1995 when it won the Jessup Cup and earned the Philippines its first-ever championship since the tournament’s inception in 1960, followed by the Ateneo Law School when it bagged the crown in 2004,” sabi pa sa resolusyon.

Ang Jessup Competition ay ipinangalan kay Philip C. Jessup, na kinatawan ng Estados Unidos sa International Court of Justice, at napili ng United Nations na magsilbi ng siyam na termino noong 1961.

Kilala siya sa pagkakaroon ng mahaba at natatanging academic, judicial at diplomatic career at may mahalagang papel sa pagbalangkas ng International Law Commission.

“The outstanding performance of the University of the Philippines College of Law Jessup Team deserves utmost commendation and praise for bringing great honor and prestige to the Filipino people and inspiring future generations of legal scholars and practitioners,” saad pa sa resolusyon

Bibigyan ng Kamara ng kopya ng pinagtibay na resolusyon ang UP College of Law.
