Stay safe, Holy Week travellers reminded
AS thousands of Filipinos prepare for the annual observance of Holy Week, the Philippine National Police headed by General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil reminded anew all travelers—both motorists and commuters—to prioritize safety and vigilance while traveling to their destinations.
With the expected surge of people traveling to the provinces, pilgrimage sites, and tourist destinations, the PNP leadership reiterated its call for responsible road use and cooperation with law enforcement authorities to ensure a peaceful and accident-free Holy Week.
For those driving their own vehicles, the PNP urges the public to observe road safety by following traffic regulations and performing necessary vehicle checks. Motorists are strongly reminded to apply the BLOWBAGETS routine before hitting the road:, Brakes, Lights, Oil, Water, Battery, Air (tire pressure),Gas, Engine, Tires and Self (driver’s condition)
In 2023, the PNP Highway Patrol Group recorded a total of 19 road-related incidents during the Lent period. In 2024, this number decreased to 17, highlighting the positive trend but also emphasizing the ongoing need for heightened awareness and proactive measures from the public, said PNP Public Information Office chief Colonel Randulf T. Tuaño.
For commuters, the PNP advised the public to be alert in crowded terminals and public transportation areas, safeguard their personal belongings and report any suspicious activities to authorities immediately.
Uniformed personnel will be deployed in bus terminals, seaports, airports, and other key transport hubs to maintain security and assist travelers, the PNP-PIO chief said.
Gen. Marbil emphasized the importance of public cooperation during the Holy Week operations.
“We appeal to the public to remain alert, disciplined, and respectful of traffic and safety laws. Our goal is to make this Lenten solemn, orderly, and free from accidents or criminal incidents,” he said.
“Always check your vehicles before travel and avoid reckless driving. For commuters, keep your valuables secured and remain vigilant in crowded areas. Let us all do our part to stay safe and make this a meaningful observance,” the top cop added.
The PNP will remain on heightened alert status throughout the Lent and assures the public that help desks and assistance centers are operational nationwide to respond to emergencies and concerns, said Col. Tuaño.
