SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Saturday congratulated Gilas Pilipinas for its greatness after winning the 19th Asian Games basketball gold medal to end the 61-year drought.

With its fantastic performance that will be talked for ages, Speaker Romualdez hailed Gilas Pilipinas for beating Jordan, 70-60, to win the gold medal at Hangzhou Olympic Centre Gymnasium.

“With immense pride and joy, we stand united with the entire Filipino nation in celebrating this historic moment. Gilas Pilipinas has accomplished something truly extraordinary, securing our country’s first Asian Games basketball gold medal in 61 years, leaving an indelible mark in the annals of sports history,” Speaker Romualdez, the leader of 300-plus strong House of Representatives, said.

Speaker Romualdez said Gilas Pilipinas’ landmark victory is a testament to the unwavering spirit and dedication of Filipino national athletes, who have displayed remarkable skill, teamwork, and resilience throughout this journey.

“Their hard work and determination have borne fruit, bringing honor and glory to our nation,” Speaker Romualdez said.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to every member of Gilas Pilipinas, their coaches, and the entire support staff who played an integral role in this exceptional achievement.

You have made our country proud, and your victory will serve as an enduring inspiration for generations of Filipino athletes striving for excellence. Mabuhay ang Gilas Pilipinas! Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino!” Speaker Romualdez added.

The Philippines got its last gold medal in 1962 Jakarta, Indonesia Asian Games courtesy of the team led by the late Fiba Hall of Famer Carlos Loyzaga.

In 1998, the Philippine team had a bronze medal finish when Tim Cone was also the coach.
