Saving water

THE intense heat in various parts of the country, including densely-populated Metropolitan Manila, may last until May or June.

Thus, we commend the Department of Environment and Natural Resoucerces (DENR) for calling on the Filipino people to save water.

The DENR, in an advisory last Friday, specifically asked private villages and condominiums to save as much water as possible.

Weather experts said that the ongoing “El Nino” weather phenomenon “is causing lower-than-average rainfall” in the country.

Besides, it is summer time in the Philippines.

DENR assured, however, that Angat Dam in Bulacan and other water sources in the metropolis still have enough water supply.

And the situation is not helped any by leaks in water pipes and faucets.

Thus, lt advised residents to check for water leaks, noting that leaks can account for 15 percent to 40 percent of used water every month.

“Dapat tumulong ang mga residente para tayo’y makapag-tipid ng tubig,” according to a well-meaning elderly housewife.

Of course, the people are in for more problems if the residents themselves refuse to help the authorities in saving water.
