Rose Van gets positive reviews on film she tried to avoid
ROSE Van Ginkle is elated over the positive reviews she’s getting for her performance as a sexy cam girl in “Kitty K-7”, now streaming on Vivamax. “Ayoko sanang panoorin at sobrang kaba ko,” she says. “First movie ko na solo ko talaga and I play the title role. Ang genre is really very sexy. The day before the press creening, I texted my leading man, Marco Gallo, and told him ayokong panoorin kasi baka hindi ko kayanin. But he said I should be there kasi press preview ‘yun. And while I’m watching it, I was really shocked sa nakaya kong gawin. But I’m so happy and thankful that people liked it. Sana, ma-enjoy nyo rin.”
Which are the most difficult scenes for her? “The nude scenes where I seduce my clients on cam, of course. The love scenes. Pero nahirapan talaga ako doon sa video call scene namin ni Marco na pinaliligaya namin ang aming sarili. Ang hirap mag-imagine while you’re on your own.”
Was she somehow able to relate to her character? “Yes, kasi my character, si Hana, wala siyang self-confidence at bumaba ang kanyang self esteem lalo na after she broke up with her boyfriend.
Ganun din ako nung araw. I started sa Pop Girls group namin noon when I was only 13 years old.”
She’s been singing and dancing for years but her career won’t soar. “Parang walang nangyayari, so I was asking myself, ano ba ang kulang sa akin? Mag-stop na ba ako sa showbiz? What else do I have to prove to myself? Kasi, kapag sunod-sunod ang rejections, mabigat talaga sa pakiramdam. But thank God, I held on and I was given bigger role when I decided to go sexy and daring. And now, finally, nabigyan ako ng launching film ko.”
“Kitty K-7” is based on the true experiences of a real cam girl, Salome Salvi, who was present at the press screening. She supports the cause of sex workers who ask that their profession be decriminalized and legalized. Salome herself was asked how she felt after watching the movie about her.
“I’m so overwhelmed,” she says. “It’s really important that my work and ‘yung humanity ng sex workers be represented fairly. And I feel that it’s the message the film communicated to me. Yes, we are human. We are putting out a commodity that is very wanted, like everyone wants sex, everyone wants to see sex. Everyone wants to make porn. But people forget that the work involves a real person with emotions.”
She praised the movie for being realistic in showing their plight. “I thought that it’s important rin that the movie shows the dangers that we face, like the harassment that we face from our followers, fans, and the people that we meet on the street. And how badly stigmatized it is, that the stigma actually rips families like what it did for me. I was actually so surprised how much the details of my story made it to the film, especially the scene where I started exploring my sexuality with the photographer as well. And the way that parang naghiwalay kami ng nanay ko. Ganoon na ganoon. It’s so important to me that this film is telling everyone na meron kaming humanity that people often forget because they always feel that there’s a separation between the product that we put out versus us the workers.”
She’s a member of the Philippine Sex Workers Collective and they aim to have their work decriminalized. “It’s really important to me that ‘yun ang naging goal ng film, to push for the decriminalization of sex work that we’re pushing for. The film is really touching. The performance of the two leads was really moving. It really touches your heart.”
