HOUSE of Representatives Health Committee Chair and Batanes Congressman Ciriaco B. Gato Jr. expressed his deep concern over the fire that hit Philippine General Hospital today, March 13, saying that it is personal to him as he spent his early years as a doctor training at the PGH.

The Health Committee Chair, who graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, said that his immediate concern goes out to the patients, their families, and the dedicated staff of PGH.

“PGH holds a revered position as our premier tertiary hospital, catering to the healthcare needs of countless patients. Any disruption to its vital operations is a devastating blow particularly to those who rely on its services the most – the underprivileged.”

Cong. Gato pointed out that this is not the first fire incident at PGH. He referenced the 2021 fire that occurred during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These incidents highlight the urgent need to invest in our public healthcare infrastructure. We must prioritize the upgrading and modernization of our hospitals, ensuring they are equipped with proper fire safety measures and advanced medical equipment.”

Cong. Gato added that several bills on the modernization of the PGH are currently under deliberation at the House of Representatives. “I urge my colleagues to expedite the review of these proposed measures and prioritize their passage to ensure the swift and comprehensive rebuilding and modernization of PGH.”

Cong. Gato also said that the House, under the leadership of Speaker Romualdez, continues to push for the provision of adequate funding and resources to healthcare infrastructure nationwide.

“While the PGH fire is a critical issue, it highlights the broader need to upgrade all public hospitals across the country. Investing in public healthcare infrastructure is not just about buildings and equipment; it’s about ensuring quality healthcare for all Filipinos,” Cong. Gato concluded.
