INCOMING Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio deserves the support of the Filipino people as she prepares to assume the top post of the Department of Education (DepEd).

This, after President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. designated the highly-articulate Duterte-Carpio, a lawyer, as the next secrtary of the education department.

In naming her as the new education secretary, Marcos pointed out that being a mother, Carpio would make sure that her children were “well-trained and well-educated.”

Although Ms. Carpio is not an educator, her appointment as head of DepEd is seen to help begin an honest look at quality education in this Third World Southeast Asian nation.

Doubtless, the Phillippines needs quality education to help prepare the country and our youngsters in the highly-competitive world of business and other fields.

There’s really that urgent need to develop world-class professionals, like medical doctors, nurses, medical technologists, engineers and information technology (IT) experts.

This, if this impoverished nation is to maintain its standing as one of the world’s major exporters of quality workers, including health professionals and seafarers.

The government, through DepEd and the Commission on Higher Education, has been trying to improve the quality of education, notably in public schools, in the country

The designation of the incoming Vice President as the new education secretary is ample proof that Marcos wants to produce a new generation of quality college graduates.

This will be good for the Philippines and the people.
