Protecting poor’s welfare

WITH the all-out support of the private sector, the government is seen to succeed in protecting the welfare of marginalized and underprivileged Filipinos across the country.

And it’s heartening to know that the business sector, academe and non-government organizations (NGOs) support the gigantic task of uplifting the living conditions of the poor.

The government, through the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) and other agencies, has concrete “plans of action” on how to address the poor’s concerns.

PCUP officials, led by Chairman Elpidio Jordan Jr., met recentlty with 20 “goodwill ambassadors,” who pledged anew to help the government in meeting the needs of the poor.

From the business sector, academe and NGOs, the “goodwill ambassadors” vowed to provide assistance to the nation’s urban poor and informal settler families (ISFs).

During the meeting, Chairman Jordan presented to the “goodwill ambassadors” PCUP’s banner programs, which are expected to be implemented next year.

These are the housing initiative “Piso Ko, Buhay Mo,” resource mobilization “Lingkod Agapay Maralita,” “Urban Poor Data Generation,” and Collaboration and Partnership Program.”

The top PCUP official pointed out that “we can only be successful in our mandate if we remain steadfast in protecting the rights of our less fortunate countrymen.”

He also underscored the importance of linking the poor, who comprise the bulk of the population, to those who have the capability to provide valuable assistance to them.

Without doubt, the PCUP is on the right track in protecting the welfare of the urban poor and informal settler families not only in Metropolitan Manila but elsewhere.
