Probe rampant agri goods importation, DOJ asked
A lawmaker appealed to the Office of the Ombudsman and the Department of Justice (DOJ) through the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the reported unhampered importation of agricultural products.
According to Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Isagani Zarate the unbridled importation is a form of economic sabotage of the country’s agriculture sector.
Zarate made the call in the midst of the outrage expressed by local sugar producers with the recent order of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) allowing the importation of raw sugar.
“Bakit mag-iimport naman ngayon ng asukal samantalang ayon mismo sa ating mga sugar producers ay mas malaki ang produksyon ng asukal ngayon kumpara noong isang taon. Nasa 1.2 milion metric tons ngayon kumpara sa 900,000 metric tons noong nakaraang taon,” Zarate said.
“Bumaba na din ang presyo ng asukal simula ngayong linggo at hindi naman din napuruhan ni Bagyong Odette ang mga taniman ng tubo. Kaya walang rason para mag-import pa nito,” the progressive solon added.
Zarate slammed the SRA and the Department of Agriculture (DA) for this action against the sugar industry, not just the planters but also the businesses.
The solon urged the NBI to investigate further to determine those behind this unbridled importation.
“Very apparent na may pinapaboran dito; hindi lang ito anomalous, parang naging economic sabotage na din ito sa panahong nasa pandemya tayo at pilit na pinapabangon ang ating ekonomiya.
Kaya nananawagan tayo sa Office of the Ombudsman at maging sa NBI na kagyat na imbestigahan ito,”. Zarate said.
Zarate also said unbridled importation is also being done with meat products, fisheries, rice, poultry, vegetables and other agricultural products.
“Importasyon na lang ba ang alam ng mga opisyal ng DA sa pangunguna ni Sec. Dar? Hindi ba puede tamang subsidies sa ating mga local producers? Sa ginagawa nila, mga dayuhan, malalaking negosyante at ang mga corrupt lamang ang kumikita dahil sa sangkatutak na importasyong ito. Samantala, ang mga local producers, mga magsasaka at mga mangingisda natin ang kawawa sa pagbaha ng mga imported na produkto,” he said.
