WITH so many problems now confronting many of the world’s nations, learning to navigate the tricky byways of international diplomacy is, without doubt, a must.

Certainly, it is heartening to know that the Philippines and the United States are commited to developing collaboration in the aspects of economy, politics and security.

And they are trying hard to identify new initiatives to bring peace and prosperity for their people.

Last January 19-20, the Department of Foreign Affairs hosted the 10th Philippines-United States Bilateral, according to DFA Undersecretary (USEC) Maria Theresa Lazaro.

Undersecretary Lazaro said the two allies agreed on several important initiatives that “demonstrate our unwavering commitment to our alliance and partnership.”

To invigorate defense and security cooperation and ensure the alliance adapts effectively to face new challenges, both sides agreed to fully implement the PH-US Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

This, they will do by expediting the completion of projects in existing agreed locations and finalizing procedures for the adoption of additional agreed locations.

In the view of various quarters, including ordinary citizens across the country, the government ought to bend to the will of the Filipino people on certain vital issues.

“Dapat pakinggan ng gobyerno ang saloobin ng taumbayan, lalong-lalo na pagdating sa pakikipagkaibigan natin sa ibang bansa,” said a retired school teacher with kin in the US.

And Filipinos believe that “iyan ang ginagawa ngayon ng administrasyon ni Pangulong Marcos.”
