UMALARMA si Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel nitong Martes sa muling pagbubukas ng imbestigasyon ng House tri-committee hinggil sa digital disinformation, sa pagsasabing ang misinformation at fake news sa social media ay umabot na sa lebel ng krisis at ngayon ay banta na sa pundasyong demokratiko ng bansa.

“We will continue our exploration of the multi-dimensional aspects of this crisis, examining the roles of social media platforms, the impact of algorithmic amplification, and the psychological mechanisms that make individuals susceptible to false information,” ani Pimentel, na vice chair ng House committee on information and communications technology.

Ayon kay Pimentel, napapanahon ang imbestigasyon habang patuloy na humaharap ang Pilipinas sa mabilis na pagbabago sa teknolohiya na bumabago sa paraan ng pagkuha at pagproseso ng impormasyon ng mga mamamayan.

Binanggit niya na habang nagbukas ang digital platforms ng mas malawak na access sa impormasyon, lumilikha rin ito ng kapaligiran kung saan madaling umusbong ang mapanirang naratibo.

“The rapid evolution of technology and the rise of digital communication platforms have transformed the way we consume information. While these advancements have brought numerous benefits, they have also facilitated the spread of false narratives, manipulated truths, and an increasingly polarized public discourse,” aniya.

Babala ni Pimentel, hindi lamang mga indibidwal ang nasasaktan sa ganitong sitwasyon, kundi pati na rin ang mga institusyong sumusuporta sa demokrasya ng Pilipinas.

“Today, we confront the daunting challenge of safeguarding our democracy and the integrity of our information ecosystem. Disinformation campaigns and the proliferation of fake news not only mislead citizens, but they also undermine trust in our institutions, weaponize public opinion, and threaten the very foundations of our democratic processes,” dagdag pa niya.

Tinukoy rin niya ang pagdami ng politically motivated fake news bilang seryosong banta, lalo na’t papalapit na ang 2025 midterm elections.

“Lalong-lalo na po sa panahong ito na kung saan ay naglipana ang mga fake news laban sa mga tumatakbo ngayong eleksyon. Nakakalungkot isipin na sa pagpapakalat ng mga maling impormasyon, hindi lang ang taong kanilang sinisiraan ang apektado ngunit pati na rin ang ating bansa,” saad niya.

Hinimok ni Pimentel ang publiko na maging mas mapanuri at aktibo sa paglaban sa disinformation, at binigyang-diin na mahalaga ang kolektibong pagbabantay upang mapanatili ang malusog na information environment.

“Dapat tayong maging mapanuri, ‘wag nating ipagwalang-bahala at bagkus labanan ang mga ganitong maling gawain. Together, we can confront the challenges posed by fake news and disinformation, ensuring a healthier public discourse,” aniya pa.

Sinabi ni Pimentel na inimbitahan ng komite ang iba’t ibang stakeholders upang magbahagi ng kaalaman at mga posibleng solusyon sa patuloy na krisis.

“We invited and will hear from experts, advocates and those on the front lines of combating this misinformation epidemic, as well as those who have been adversely affected by its far-reaching consequences,” wika niya.

Binigyang-diin ni Pimentel na layunin ng pagdinig na makabuo ng konkretong mga solusyon, at hindi lamang matukoy ang lawak ng problema.

“Our goal for today is not simply to identify the problems, but to forge a path forward—developing actionable strategies for education, policy reform, and technology that can counter these threats.

We owe it to ourselves, to the future generations, and to the principles of truth and integrity upon which our society is built,” ayon pa kay Pimentel.
