On Pasig congressional cbers’ joke to with single moms
HOUSE Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs Chairman Jude Acidre of Tingog Party-list on Friday called on voters to reject Pasig congressional candidate Christian “Ian” Sia in the coming election following his reported joke that single mothers could sleep with him once a year, adding that such statements should carry consequences.
Acidre, a House Assistant Majority Leader, underscored the need for voters to be discerning in their choices, advocating against electing individuals who display disrespectful behavior.
“Hindi man ho ako botante sa Pasig eh ‘wag ho nating iboto ‘yung mga ganitong klaseng politiko. Yung bastos. ‘Yung walang paggalang sa babae,” Acidre told reporters in a press conference via Zoom.
“Well definitely, there should be consequences for things like this,” Acidre stated, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.
Acidre highlighted the offensive nature of Sia’s language, stating, “Clearly the language alone, the fact na sinabi niya for me is already offensive sa ating mga kababaihan.”
He further emphasized that such issues should not be taken lightly, especially during election periods.
The lawmaker stressed the importance of not normalizing such language and behavior in society.
“It’s time that we do not normalize this, even jokes, so we do not normalize this language and these actions,” Acidre said, urging for a higher standard in public discourse.
Acidre pointed out that such behavior is unacceptable regardless of the timing, stating, “Sa tingin natin eh hindi po nararapat na aayon sa panahon ng eleksyon lalong-lalo. O kahit hindi ho panahon ng eleksyon.”
The Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) show cause order is part of its efforts to uphold fair campaigning and prevent discrimination during the election period.
The commission has given Sia 72 hours to respond, warning that failure to comply may lead to the filing of appropriate cases against him.
“Tama lang ho na bigyan ng karampatang parusa kung meron man ang ating, ito itong kandidatong ito,” Acidre said.
Acidre also emphasized the broader implications of such remarks, noting that trivializing issues like rape and making sexual innuendos are unacceptable.
“Hindi po pwedeng to take lightly no, ang mga issues ng katulad ng rape katulad ng sexual innuendoes,” Acidre said.
