PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Gen. Rommel Francisco D. Marbil as the new chief of the 232,000-strong Philippine National Police (PNP).`

Born in Manila 55 summers ago, Marbil became the 30th PNP chief, replacing his mistah Gen. Benjamin C. Acorda Jr. of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte.

Marbill and Acorda are both members of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Sambisig Class of 1991. He is due to retire on Feb. 7, 2025.

Like the men and women in military uniform, members of the PNP are retired upon reaching the age of 56.

As the country’s premier law enforcement agency, with its national headquarters at Camp Crame in Quezon City, the PNP is civilian in nature but national in scope.

In a speech, Marbil vowed to ensure “continuity and improvement” in the organizarion, noting that their scope of responsibilities was evolving in a changing society.

He said new forms of criminality evolve whenever there is an opportunity to exploit the weaknesses that advancement brings.

Effective law enforcement nowadays, he said, requires competency and innovation in the use and application of modern technology.

People believe that Marbil has concrete plans of action on how to address the various concerns on the road to winning the war against all forms of criminality.

With Marbil at the helm of the PNP, plus the support of President Marcos, DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. and the public, there should be happy reasons to expect the best in the days ahead.
