THE Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to address a habeas corpus plea demanding the release of one of the 11 detained suspects involved in the high-profile murder case of Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo and several others.

The plea was submitted by Conchita Miranda, the mother of suspect Marvin Miranda, who allegedly played a key role in the sensational killing that occurred on March 4.

Conchita, in her petition, implored the high court to order her son’s release and to prevent the NBI “from engaging in or attempting any actions that violate his rights.”

Furthermore, she urged the high court to compel the NBI to discard the evidence obtained during the alleged unlawful arrest of her son.

The attack on the governor’s residence in Pamplona town was executed by heavily armed individuals donning camouflage uniforms.

The incident transpired while Degamo was conducting a meeting with beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

Nineteen days after the Supreme Court declared Degamo the victor in the fiercely contested gubernatorial race in the province, he fell victim to the assault.

The death toll resulting from the daytime attack on Degamo and several others has risen to 10, with one individual succumbing to gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.
