ILLEGALLY constructed houses and structures within 50 meters from the security fence of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa have been demolished by prison officers over the weekend.

Bureau of Corrections chief Gerard Bantag ordered the immediate removal of the houses and structures as part of the prison facility’s bid to improve security.

“Kasama na rin po dito ang planong pagpapatayo ng mga panibagong imprastraktura sa mga lupang nasasakupan ng BuCor para masolusyunan ang lumalalang congestion sa ating mga kulungan,” BuCor said in a statement.

In April of last year, BuCor conducted a demolition of makeshift houses and shanties at the vicinity of Camp Bukang Liwayway in NBP.

The demolition was led by the BUCOR Support and Escort Command – Special Operations Unit (BSEC- SOU), BUCOR Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Minimum Security Compound Diversified and Maintenance Unit (MSE – DMU) and Public Information Office (PIO) elements, with selected PDL Trustees-helpers headed by CCInsp. Rodel Niño Lagman, Chief, BSEC – SOU, and CSUPT. Alfredo A. Devaras, Jr., Chief, BSEC.

Aside from NBP in Muntinlupa, the other BuCor prison facilities are Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Oriental Mindoro, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, and the Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.
