BARELY a week after parting ways with NLEX, seven-time PBA champion Yeng Guiao is coming back to his former team, Rain or Shine.

In a Facecook post on Monday, Rain or Shine welcomed Guiao back to the team:

“He’s back.Coach Yeng Guiao was the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ Head Coach from 2011 to 2016. He led the team to 6 Finals appearances and 2 Championships; the 2012 Governor’s Cup and the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup. Now, he returns to coach a new generation of Elasto Painters. Only Gabe Norwood, Beau Belga, and Jewel Ponferrada remain from the ROS team Coach Yeng coached,” said Rain or Shine in the post.

The team also urged Rain or Shine fans to show support to Guiao.

“Let’ s show some love and welcome back Coach Yeng Guiao!”

The 63-year-old coach from Pampanga, who reportedly signed a three-year deal, handled Rain or Shine from 2011 to 2016.

Under Guiao, the Elasto Painters made it to the finals six times and won two titles in the 2012 Governor’s Cup and 2016 Commissioner’s Cup.

Rain or Shine team owners Terry Que and Raymond Yu welcomed the veteran coach back and expressed confidence about the team’s chances in the coming Commissioners’ Cup.

“We talked to Yeng the other day and we finalized the deal today. Yeng is happy to be back but we’re happier that he’s now with us again,” said Yu.

“We’ve wished that he will have the opportunity to coach this team again when he left us six years ago. Now we’re happy and excited that he’s back with us.”

“I’m very happy to see Yeng back in the Rain or Shine family,” said Que.

“When Yeng became available, tinawagan ko na agad si Raymund. Sabi ko kausapin niya na agad si coach. Baka makawala pa,” added Que.

Guiao will take the place of Chris Gavina, who handled the team starting in 2021 season.

The Gavina-coached Elasto Painters made it to the playoffs only once during the All-Filipino conference last season.

The E-Painters, however, fell short of repeating that in the 2022 Philippine Cup after finishing ninth with a 4-7 record in the standings.

Gavina is expected to stay in the team as Guiao’s first assistant coach.
