From an Armless Ghost to a Headless Horseman – UK’s January Ghost Sightings

There are numerous ghosts that are said to appear every January in the United Kingdom, so let’s take a look at some of them.

Around January 1st (usually a couple of days before or after that date), the disembodied cries of Andrew Mills can be heard close to the High Hill House farm in Ferryhill, England. He apparently committed murders at the farm in 1863 and he claimed that the Devil told him to do it.

Every year on January 1st, the ghost of an armless woman appears at the Overwater Hall Hotel in Ireby, England. After Joseph Gillbanks bought the building back in 1814, he allegedly had an affair with a Jamaican girl who became pregnant. When he found out, he cut off her arms before drowning her.

A golden coach pulled by four headless horses appears every year on January 1st at The Hatches in Manningford Bruce, England.

On January 5th, the ghost of a squire rides a grey horse around in circles on the driveway of the Tainfield House in Kingston St. Mary, England. He is also heard rattling chains in his hands.

HorseThe ghostly sounds of a woman crying can be heard on January 14th coming from a church in West Deeping, England, on the anniversary of her death. Her husband was so upset from her death that he took his own life the next day by jumping off a footbridge over the railway track in Tallington where he was hit and killed by an oncoming train. The ghostly event happens every year on January 15th – the anniversary of his death.

The sounds of horse hooves can be heard at Braddock Down in Lostwithiel, England, on January 19th at the site of a Cromwellian defeat.

Every year on January 20th – also known as St. Agnes Eve – a woman known as Lady Mohun is witnessed at Moon’s Moat in Redditch, England.

The spirit of a big white horse is witnessed every January 25th at the Nether Lypiatt Manor in Lypiatt, England. The horse is seen carrying the dead body of a blacksmith who was once hanged for not completing a project in the proper amount of time. According to another legend, the blacksmith unlocks the gates and opens them. Additionally, there is a ghostly “grey lady” who allegedly haunts the building.

It is said that every January 31st, Lady Wintour is seen at Huddington Court in Huddington, England. She is apparently still mourning the death of her husband Robert Wintour who was executed on January 31, 1606 for participating in the Gunpowder Plot.

Ghost1A headless horseman can be spotted with a big black hound every January 31st on a road in Stourton, England. He allegedly broke his neck when he was thrown off his horse.
