CABANATUAN CITY — A social media post from a local barangay office here went viral after it reported about several incidents wherein food delivery riders got victimized by fake orders allegedly made by at least 11 barangay chairmen in this city.

A post from the Facebook page of Pamunuang Barangay Mabini Extension (PBME) said that Food Panda delivery riders got scammed by this fake order scheme using the name of several barangay officials in the city.

It was learned that at least four riders were duped to deliver the food package that was allegedly ordered by barangay captain Myra Capinpin, at the Mabini Homesite barangay hall on Friday.

The said FB post garnered 190 reactions, 35 comments and 179 shares.

Another netizen, Ariel Sale, commenting on a shared post by Ang Bagong Nueva Ecija, said: “Dapat kc naka register na ang sim card na wala ng manloloko only in the Philippines na ang sim card hindi nakaregister.”

Cez Encarnacion echoed the same sentiment: “Registration of mobile numbers is a must.”

This fraudulent practice victimizing delivery riders, which has become rampant during the pandemic, has prompted Senator Lito Lapid to author Senate Bill No. 1677 or the Food and Grocery Delivery Services Protection Act.

Lapid’s bill seeks to protect riders by imposing penalties and fines against individuals making such fraudulent orders and adopting a reimbursement scheme for them in case of unjustified cancellation of orders or fake bookings.
